Artwork labels

Artwork label template for gallery and exhibition walls

A good wall label is quiet, consistent and easy to scan. Use this guide to format artwork labels for a solo show, group exhibition, open studio or art fair — then generate print-ready labels in GalleryCue.

What belongs on an artwork label?

For most exhibitions, the essential sequence is simple: artist, artwork title, year, medium and dimensions. Add a price only when the organiser expects prices on the wall; many galleries keep prices on a separate list instead.

If visitors need more context, a QR code can point to an artist page, artwork story, audio, purchase enquiry or digital catalogue without turning the physical label into a paragraph.

A practical label order

  • Artist name
  • Artwork title — often italicised
  • Year completed
  • Medium and materials
  • Dimensions — normally height × width × depth
  • Optional edition, inventory number or catalogue number
  • Optional price or “price on request”
  • Optional QR code

How large should gallery labels be?

There is no universal museum label size. The right size depends on viewing distance, wall space and how much information you need to show. For small exhibitions, a compact card around postcard size or smaller is common; for long interpretive text, use a separate panel rather than shrinking the type.

Prioritise legibility. A label that technically fits but forces visitors to lean into the wall is not doing its job. Keep line lengths short, leave generous whitespace, and test-print one label before producing the full set.

Should prices appear on wall labels?

For a commercial open studio, art fair or informal exhibition, displaying prices can reduce friction for buyers. For many gallery environments, prices are kept on a separate price list. GalleryCue supports both approaches: wall-label prices can be switched on or off while the price list remains part of the full pack.

Printing and mounting tips

  • Print at Actual size or 100% rather than Fit to page.
  • Use clean white or off-white card unless the exhibition design calls for something else.
  • Keep one type treatment across the entire show.
  • Trim consistently and mount labels at a repeatable height.
  • Check every title, dimension and price against your master list before hanging.
