QR-linked exhibitions

QR codes for art exhibitions and artwork labels

QR codes are useful when the visitor needs more than a wall label can comfortably hold. The best implementation keeps the essential artwork information visible and uses the code only for optional depth.

What should an art QR code link to?

  • A dedicated artwork page
  • A longer artist statement or story
  • Audio or video about the work
  • A purchase or enquiry page
  • A digital catalogue entry
  • Accessibility information or alternate-language content

Keep the label useful without the phone

Do not hide the title, artist, medium or dimensions behind a QR code. Visitors should understand what they are looking at even if they do not scan. Treat the code as an extension of the label, not a replacement for it.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

A static QR code permanently encodes the destination URL. It is simple and has no ongoing service cost. A dynamic QR code normally redirects through a provider so the final destination can be changed later and scans may be measured. For a short exhibition with stable artwork URLs, static codes are often sufficient.

Placement and print testing

  • Give the code enough white space around it.
  • Do not print it so small that older phone cameras struggle.
  • Test from the expected viewing distance.
  • Check every destination on both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  • Avoid placing glossy codes where reflections interfere with scanning.
  • Re-test after the label is mounted in the final lighting.

Privacy and visitor experience

Use QR destinations that are fast, mobile-friendly and clear about any data collection. Do not force visitors into an account or mailing list simply to read basic artwork information. If the code goes to a sales or contact page, make that purpose obvious.
